For the past 20 years, I have worked as a Lighting Cameraman in the UK freelance market, with one year in New Zealand. I work for a variety of organisations either directly or via independent companies as a Cameraman for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Sky TV, Discovery and Food Channel to name just a few.
I have also work extensively in the corporate/advertising arena, so in essence I can pitch up in any camp and adapt to any visual style. I am based in the West Midlands in Birmingham, although I can base from Manchester, London or Bristol and can cover a large part of central UK at no extra cost, and
I am probably the closest cameraman to parts of mid Wales. From my credit list as Lighting Cameraman you will see I have worked on a huge variety of programmes. My approach to filming is that no project is too small or too large. Everything has its own challenges, rewards and merits. I am renowned for being quick! I pride myself on my ability to light with speed and enthusiasm to a very high standard. I can adapt quickly to any situation, working with the team or just ‘getting on with it’. My handheld work is fluid and I always provide the editor with plenty of cutaways! I am quick to adapt to changing situations and great at problem solving, often helped by the collection of bizarre bits and pieces I carry in the van. (This is often overlooked when booking a crew who just pitch up with hired kit.) I can work independently, providing sequences that will cut seamlessly, or work alongside creative talents to achieve their vision.
I would also class myself as a DOP if you require a more creative Lighting set up with the ability to work with a large team. For instance Discovery Canada hire me to shoot and direct short films which happen to occur in the UK when the budget to send a producer or director doesn’t prove cost effective. Instead of being a Shooting Director, I am happy to become a Directing Shooter, where you can at least guarantee the shots will be better composed and in focus! I have world-wide experience, having worked in most of Europe, the US, the Middle East and the South Pacific. Despite my extensive credit list, I approach each film with the same passion I had when I first started. I always live by the motto ‘You are only as good as your last job’!
I own all my kit, which I maintain and service regularly. As well as ensuring that it is in top condition, it also means that my technical knowledge is second to none. Please do feel free to call to discuss any future filming projects, either big or small, which you might have coming up. I am always very happy to have a chat.
I look forward to hearing from you.
